THOMAS MARTIN RANDALL (1786-1859) THREE SHEETS OF BIRD STUDIES, ONE EXTENSIVELY INSCRIBED WITH THE LINNAEAN NAMES watercolour, the two larger sheets on Creswick paper and blindstamped THOMAS CRESWICK PATENT, two 25.5 x 40cm (one lacking lower left hand corner) and 12 x 16.5cm

On the reverse of the study of Bullfinches are further pen and ink studies of eight other birds including a heron, pheasant and cockatoos

Provenance: The artist's widow Louisa (Shipley, nee West, d1847) thence by descent in the West family to Mrs J Launder, from whom acquired by the present vendor, c1980.

Exhibited: On loan to Clive House Museum Shrewsbury until 1997.

Illustrated: (Inscribed sheet Twitchett (J), Derby Porcelain, 1980, col plt 46.

Literature: Edmundson (R S), Thomas Martin Randall; China Decorator and Manufacturer, NCS Journal 1993, fig 1.

In his NCS paper Roger Edmundson has drawn attention to the close similarities between Randall's documented bird painting of which the present three sheets are the only known fully documented watercolours with, in particular, the Nantgarw Duke of Cambridge and Mackintosh Services of c1818 and 1820.
