Provenance: Lt Col Frederick Victor Henry ("Joe") Lynch, M.B.E. (1927-2005) was conscripted into the Army in 1947. Over the ensuing 37 years he saw service in post War Berlin (during the Siege), elsewhere in Germany, Singapore and Malaya, the West Indies, Gibraltar and Cyprus. 

He represented his Battalion at tennis and squash and played cricket, hockey and soccer for the Sergeant's Mess. According to the regimental history, Lt Col Lynch "was a much feared R.S.M. and his personal standards of discipline and fitness were always of the highest. He was one of only three R.S.M.'s to reach the rank of Lieut-Colonel".
