An English violin and bow, Edwin Gabbitas (1889-1974), length of back 36cm, signed handwritten label, the bow with octagonal stick, ebony frog with mother of pearl eye, silver screw, silver wire winding and ivory tip plate, 61g  

Edwin Gabbitas (1889-1974), the son of a tenant farmer at Mattersey Grange, Nottinghamshire. A cabinet maker and joiner by trade, he attained the rank of Sergeant in the Royal Engineers in WWI. 

He is thought to have made a total of 12 fine violins and several bows. One of his instruments was sold at auction at Bonhams in 2002. 

Sold with an illustrated testimony by his grandson, the present vendor.
