Edwin Gabbitas (1889-1974), the son of a tenant farmer at Mattersey Grange, Nottinghamshire. A cabinet maker and joiner by trade, he attained the rank of Sergeant in the Royal Engineers in WWI.
He is thought to have made a total of 12 fine violins and several bows. One of his instruments was sold at auction at Bonhams in 2002.
Sold with an illustrated testimony by his grandson, the present vendor.
