WORLD WAR ONE, GROUP OF THREE British War Medal, Victory Medal and Special Constabulary Long Service Medal, GV, H BROWNE B R C & ST J J [Dep Chief S C Harold Browne C C ] with several photographs, official documents including his appointment as the military representative on the Southwell Rural Tribunal established under the Military Service Acts 1916, letters, Red Cross Record Book (endorsed Voluntary), City of Nottingham signed scarlet card badge of a Chief Special Constable and two albums of 77 and 143 mounted photographs (up to postcard size) and several aerial photographs of the aftermath of battles, including the wreckage of one of the four German airships lost in the Battle of Verdun, many including ambulances, Browne's colleagues and scenes from the battlefield, presumably Verdun, 1916
Provenance: The recipient, Harold Browne of Burgage Hill, Southwell, Nottinghamshire, a motor driver with the RRCS, whose service began when he was aged 44 in September 1916; thence by descent to the present vendor.
When in 1916 Harold Browne was appointed a military representative on the Southwell Military Tribunal his age had prevented him from enlisting with the British Army. Instead he became a voluntary driver with the Section Sanitaire Anglais No 17 Red Cross and served with the unit in France for a year. He was commended by his CO for his courage in driving his ambulance to the French front line around Verdun. When he left SSA 17 he was recommended for a commission in the Army Service Corps - Motor Transport.
