When in 1916 Harold Browne was appointed a military representative on the Southwell Military Tribunal his age had prevented him from enlisting with the British Army. Instead he became a voluntary driver with the Section Sanitaire Anglais No 17 Red Cross and served with the unit in France for a year. He was commended by his CO for his courage in driving his ambulance to the French front line around Verdun. When he left SSA 17 he was recommended for a commission in the Army Service Corps - Motor Transport.
