Sir Alfred William Watson KCB, FIA (1870-1936) was educated at Nottingham High School after which he entered the office of his grandfather, a consulting actuary with a large practice among friendly societies. He moved to London in 1910 where he was soon appointed Chief Actuary to the National Health Insurance Committee. Such were the calls on his time from the various departments of government that in 1917 he was given the title of Government Actuary, the first holder of the post which he retained until May 1936.
