William Byron, 4th Byron (1699/70-1736), of Newstead Abbey, his warrant as appointment as a Bowbearer of Sherwood Forest, Nottinghamshire, dated 1702, ink on parchment, inscribed in a secretarial hand, signed Newcastle by John Holles, Duke of Newcastle upon Tyne, KG, PC (1662-1711), by his authority as Steward Keeper & Warden of the Forest of Sherwood and Park of Fulwood, the upper-left with his seal, 32 x 38cm, & Byron's later appointment as the Chief Ranger of the same forest, dated 1716, ink on parchment, inscribed in secretarial hand, signed Holles Newcastle by Thomas Pelham-Holles, Duke of Newcastle upon Tyne, KG, PC, FRS (1693-1768), by his authority as Steward Keeper & Warden of the Forest of Sherwood and Park of Fulwood, nephew of the aforementioned 1st and last duke of the 2nd creation, Pelham-Holles being the 1st duke of the 3rd creation, the upper-left with his seal, 28 x 36cm, each later mounted and framed, (2)
Byron's appointment as bowbearer, itself an anachronistic piece of Old English law and a nod to feudalism in 1702, was probably the last 'made to this ancient and once honourable office' (Bailey, Annals of Nottingham, 1852, page 1069).
