Provenance: 2nd) To the Hon. Auberon Herbert MP./With the author's compliments/A souvenir of ***/of 1873, ink MS inscription to verso of ffep. A year earlier Herbert played a leading role in the passing of the Protection of Wild Birds Act 1872; no doubt Harting, a leading ornithologist and natural historian, was grateful to the Liberal libertarian MP for his efforts, and this book may have been a token of that thanks.
