Provenance: 1) Possibly exhibited at the London Artists’ Association, 1933, along with several working and finished Beach related works, dated c. 1929. 2) Exhibited by Ernest Brown & Phillips, Ltd., at The Leicester Galleries, W.C.2., 'Paintings and Drawings by William Roberts', February 1958, whence purchased by a Miss Lander; printed and inscribed gallery labels verso.
A boldly coloured study squared for transfer. For the corresponding pencil sketch, dated c. 1929, see the Roberts collection at Tate Britain, 'Families on a beach', T12629.
Centre with a vertical 11cm scuff/scratch, with minor loss at the base, yet becoming fainter. The sheet with further and fainter minor scuffs in places. Retaining strong colouring, some minor toning (see lower-left) and some minor foxed spots (see upper-right).
