Emma Kelly was given the sobriquet 'The Lady of 6,000 Songs' by the lyricist Johnny Mercer (1909-1976), a great-grandson of the Confederate general Hugh W. Mercer (1808-1877) who commissioned the building of Mercer House, Savannah, Georgia, where, in 1981, Danny Hansford (1960-1981) was shot by the house's then owner, Jim Williams (1930-1990), a story retold in this novel and later dramatised as a film directed by Clint Eastwood.
