Latin Poetry. Bundles of approx. 85 poems, dated 1818-20, inscribed Orde in each margin, ink MS on paper, mostly bifolium, presumably of original composition, for some verses are duplicated, revised &/or later dated, many sheets show occasional corrections to the Latin, the contents titled in Latin, occasionally ancient Greek and sometimes docketed in English, comprising Indolence, Female Eloquence, Sports of Animals, Marriage, Athens, Trees, The Oak, Death of the King (i.e. George III), On Passing the Red Sea, Fire, Water, Devils on two sticks, Health, Heathen Gods, Admonita locorum (Hints of places), Warm Springs, The Ant, Pain follows pleasure, further classical and Biblical subjects, etc., the subject matter, as well as the compositions, show the august influence of Horace and the concept of otium: the author's notice is not above the minutiae of everyday life, but his intellect is clearly capable of more cerebral questions.
Provenance: the Orde, later Campbell-Orde baronets, of Morpeth, Northumberland, and later of Kilmory House, Argyllshire, Scotland; sold Bonhams, Fine Books, Manuscripts, et al., 4th December, 2019, lot 16 (part-lot).
