The artist and picture conservator Richard Hobson (1945-2004) of the Bowes Museum, who restored this charming dummy board (and lot 652) for the present vendor in 1980, considered them to be 18th century (copy invoice available).
On the reverse an old structural repair with four battens, the front with retouching and restoration but a striking and rare object
