Derek Carruthers (1935-2021) - Interfusion Mobile Construction - Black to White, composite or plastic and black, grey and white paint in nine sections, 223 x 46cm
Exhibited: Drian Galleries, London, Carruthers, Campbell, Cross, Kirchberger (1963); Nottingham: Djanogly Gallery 31 August - 20 October 2019, Catalogue p.14.
"A later example from the long Interfusion series of suspended mobile constructions that produce a series of images and relationships as they move."
"Of the constructionists, Derek Carruthers' mobiles on the theme of interfusion are hieroglyphic, rigid surfaces and pictographic divisions, which fanned into motion present a speculative space. Everything is clear cut and orderly in the direction investigated by Van Tongerloo and Max Bill, rather than Calder. But there is one important difference: you will find more poetic intensity in a whimsical movement of one of Carruthers' mobiles than in all the desperate sense of boredom offered by either of these arid purists...[Carruthers' mobiles] have a curious resemblance to the stilt-like construction of a modern skyscraper..." (from the review of the Drian Exhibition by Conroy Maddox)
