According to an old label on the frame, the sitter has been traditionally identified as George Seddon (1727-1801) founder of the London cabinet makers of Aldersgate St (Fl. 1783-1815)

Restored in the 19th c and subsequently and now ready to hang. Retouched blistered paint on the darkest passages, lined perhaps in the early 20th c and placed onto the present stretchers. In pieced giltwood frame, frame re-gilt with small losses
