ENGLISH SCHOOL, 1800-1810 PORTRAIT OF AN OFFICER bust length, oil on panel, oval, 30 x 23cm
The style of the sitter's single breasted tunic and lace at the throat dates the present portrait to the first decade of the 19th century or thereabouts. The relatively plain uniform and black epaulette is of the type worn by some, but not all, of the many penal corps that served in the West Indies. The officer's cross belt shows no regimental inscription.
The medium a little thin in places and with some possible retouching, the varnish requiring a light clean, the panel not warped or split, the giltwood cavetto frame regilt in a bronzing paint and larger chip on edge of frame at 8 o'clock
