Ireland, Female Education. Specimens of Needle-Work Executed in the Female Model School, Kildare-Place, Dublin, 26(+1) mounted cotton, linen and wool specimens on printed leaves, arranged from first to twelfth class, plates 22 x 14cm, original Morocco backed marbled boards, Dublin: printed by George Folds [c1836]

The Society for the Promotion of Education of the Poor of Ireland, better known as the Kildare Place Society, was established in 1811 by a group of enlightened philanthropists, many of whom were Quakers. The Society's principal aim was establishing a national system of modern primary education on a non-denominational Christian basis that was acceptable to Catholics.

It was involved in teacher training for men and women, the building of schools and the establishment of an inspectorate. From 1815 onwards, the Society received substantial government grant aid. An important part of its mission was the publication of greatly improved publications for the poor, who’s only previous experience of printed matter was the chap book.

The present book appears to be extremely rare and is, moreover, complete, retaining all the specimens of finished garments in miniature, including examples of hosiery, straw plaiting, a corset, smock, woollen blanket, patchwork, darning samples, printed cotton and a linen sampler inscribed MODEL SCHOOL KILDARE PLACE 1836
