Provenance: By descent in the Hambro family until sold on the instructions of Sir Eric Hambro KBE (1872-1947), Phillips, Son & Neale on the premises at Milton Abbey, Dorset, 15-23 September 1932, lot 1836 "A large two-handled sword with double ring-guards, the quillons decorated with scrolls, 5ft" (£4.14.6) to Charles Angell of 34 Milsom Street, Bath acting as the agent of Colonel Geoffrey Hippisley-Cox CBE DL (1884-1954); thence by descent to the present vendor
In a letter to his client, Charles Angell wrote on the 22nd September 1932 "You will note we have purchased two Swords for you, and we sincerely trust this will be in order; our reason being that as the first one did not fetch half the price you told us to go, we thought you would like the second one...Our motorman is collecting the swords today"
