Dame Laura Knight DBE, RA, RWS (1877-1970) - Staithes Fisherwoman, oil on panel, 29.5 x 23cm
There is an unfinished oil sketch of flowers in a pink vase on the reverse
Provenance: A gift from Laura Knight to her friend and contemporary the actress Madeline Duval (Du Val), Mrs Henry Bowes (1878 Cork - Bournemouth 1970) by whom given to her friend Mrs Ursuline Bingham Dalton (1916-2001), thence by descent to the present vendor
To be included in the Laura Knight catalogue raisonne by R John Croft FCA under the title Staithes Fisherwoman as an unsigned attributed work ref 0094
Reflecting on this period, Laura Knight wrote "The drawing of hands and arms held for me a special interest: I studied their movement every chance I had. Sketch-books were filled with nothing else. In both the spirited handling of paint and the composition there is nothing still or static in this intimate interior of this fisherman's cottage overlooking the harbour of the north east Yorkshire coastal village. The distinctive 'lilac print' cotton on the subject's head was a distinctive feature of the dress of Staithe's women (oil paint and grease paint t81 and passim)"
To be sold with the exhibition catalogues Laura Knight Portraits and Laura Knight in the Open Air (two copies)
Fine original condition, no restoration or overpainting, panel not warped or split. Never cleaned
