Sold with a letter from Lillian Browse to David Bruxner, 30 March 1982 "I feel quite sure that your painting [on the basis of a photograph] is by William Nicholson and I believe it to have been painted about the early '20s...", envelope, and copy of a note from Patricia Reed, May 1920, confirming the identity of the sitter.  

Nicholson's portrait of Colonel Sir Robert Williams was commissioned by the Court of Assistants of the Goldsmiths Company on May 8, 1929 [Browse, Catalogue, No 421]  

Colonel Sir Robert Williams, 1st Bt of Bridehead (1848-1943), Dorchester was educated at Eton and Oxford. He was subsequently employed by the Waihi Gold Mining Company Ltd
