HOLINSHED, RAPHAEL

THE FIRSTE VOLUME OF THE CHRONICLES OF ENGLAND, SCOTLANDE, AND IRELANDE

London, Iohn Hunne, [1577]. Folio, a fragment only, containing woodcut title and prelims followed by 3 parts, these being: 'The Description of Britaine' (125 of 126 leaves, lacking folio 94 otherwise complete), followed by; 'Description of Irelande' (A 28-leaf section, complete in itself), followed by 'The Historie of Englande' (112 of 115 numbered pages, lacking final 2 leaves). Title and prelims detached/loose, main text block stitching broken, one or two single wormholes at beginning which touch the odd letter, heavy worming to inner margin of first few gatherings (largely missing text but sometimes touching letters), soiling, multiple contemporary ink notes to margins, corners and some margins creased, the text now largely loose in the original 16th century leather binding over oak boards, boards with blind panelling, worn and dusty with multiple single wormholes. Despite the condition, this 16th century fragment contains much of interest and is worthy of restoration. The section on 'Englande' is extensively illustrated with woodcuts. Sold w.a.f., not subject to return
