Bibliophily. A Gentlemen's Militia in Regency London. Presentment &c 1802/[for] Saint George Hanover Square [Armed Association], 8ff of ink manuscript, citing Edward Boodle, Esquire, their Captain Commandant, Jospeh Haslewood, Secretary, Lieutenant John Tombling, and detailing some of their duties, minutes, etc., verso of the final leaf is a catalogue of ten unexceptional Georgian book titles, including Hume & Smollet, Robertson, Gibbon, etc., disbound, 8vo, [&] an unconnected late 19th century library catalogue, 13ff of manuscript, citing short titles only, original marbled wrappers, 4to, (2).
The Hanover Square Association was instituted in June 1798, when they resolved to serve without pay, to assist the civil magistrates in suppressing any riot, tumults, or hostile force, within the eponymous parish, for which they provided uniforms and accouterments at their expense. There was also a body of inhabitants, not trained to use arms, who were ready to assists in such a manner which would be judged most useful.
