Germany, Third Reich. The badges, cloth insignia and armband taken by POW Norman Wilmott Hornsby (1916-2008), Glider Pilot Regiment, on his liberation from Stalag III-A, 1945 (19)
Provenance: N W Hornsby, thence by descent to the present vendor.
In the (unpublished) biography of N W Hornsby, "Our Dad's War 1939-1945", it is recorded that he and several other POWs had a 36 hour 'window of opportunity' in which to enter the camp offices and loot souvenirs. This occurred in the middle of April 1945 when the German guards fled the advancing red army and the arrival of the Soviet forces (see also lot 535)
