A Dutch East Indies gold mounted tortoiseshell betel box, probably Batavia (Jakarta), 19th c, with pierced and chased corners, central ornamental escutcheon and hinges with long straps to the underside of the lid, the spiral loop handles centred by a flower, plain lock, 7cm h; 12.5 x 17cm
Tortoiseshell dry; not cracked or split, small resinous residue just visible through the mount on one back corner; old accretion of dust/dirt.
