An embroidered textile book cover, 17th c, centred by a vellum oval reserve painted in polychrome with Saint the Gregory the Great, with his insignia as pope, flanked by amorini, the claret textile ground worked in silvered and coloured threads and sequins with flowers, C-scrolls and foliage, gilt border, 28 x 22cm
Good condition, including the colours. One or two very minor losses, one or two minor holes, but displaying well. In a contemporaneous Flemish ebonised frame, but the pairing itself later.
