WRIGHT, JAMES

THE HISTORY AND ANTIQUITIES OF THE COUNTY OF RUTLAND

London, Bennet Griffin, 1684. First edition, tall 4to, double page engraved county map, full page and smaller engravings in text, armorials, title and prelims loose, map with loss of paper to left-hand blank margin not affecting engraved area, some browning, chipping and corner/marginal loss to edges of some leaves (nowhere near text), p31/32 with crude repair affecting engraving to verso, some damp-stain to lower blank margin towards rear. Contemporary brown calf, worn, boards near-detached. Plus: BLORE, THOMAS - THE HISTORY AND ANTIQUITIES OF THE COUNTY OF RUTLAND. VOL I PART II [all published] CONTAINING THE EAST HUNDRED AND INCLUDING THE HUNDRED OF CASTERTON PARVA. Stanford, [1811]. Tall folio, 11 engraved plates (complete), contemporary half calf, rubbed, upper board with large black morocco and gilt title onlay. Despite the title, vol I part I was never actually published, nor indeed were any other volumes. Additionally the list of plates indicates 13 in total but with plates V and VIII being "delivered with a subsequent portion of this work" - so all copies have 11 plates only. A rare work, only 300 copies having been printed - 250 standard size at 4 guineas, and 50 large paper copies at double the price. Our copy measures approx 46 x 31 cm. American Book Prices Current records only one copy sold since 1990 (2)
