Andrew Wallace, his three commissions, dated 1798-1803, as Ensign and Lieutenant in 34th (Cumberland) Regiment of Foot, commanded by George Fitzroy, 2nd Lord Southampton as regimental Colonel, dated 13th September, 1798, and 19th April, 1799 respectively, each signed, among others, by both George III and William Cavendish-Bentinck, 3rd Duke of Portland, typically docketed to verso; and his captaincy in 53rd (Shropshire) Regiment of Foot, commanded by General Charles Crosbie as regimental colonel, dated 9th July, 1803, signed, among others, by the monarch George III, sealed and docketed, 29.7 x 40cm, contemporary toleware canister and push-cover (see also preceding lot)
Provenance: By descent in the Milroy family to the present vendor
David Milroy, Medical Staff, was born at Crailing, Roxburghshire, the son of the Reverend Andrew Milroy and his wife Margaret, nee Price in 1831. In the Crimean War he saw service with the Cambridgeshire Regiment at Scutari, from May 1854 and subsequently in Canada. He died of yellow fever at St George’s, Bermuda, on 3rd September 1864. His brother was the Reverend Andrew Milroy (1841-1902).
