Royal Navy. C.S. Forester (pseud. of Cecil Louis Troughton Smith; 1899-1966), TLS addressed to a Mr Calthrop, 1pp, dated 6th December, 1949, typed on the author's 1570 Hawthorne Terrace, Berkeley 8, California writing paper, autographed C.S. Forester, the letter an apologetic explanation for the creation of Lady Barbara Wellesley, crafted by the author to connect Horatio Hornblower to an influential family (later the Dukes of Wellington), of which the recipient of this letter was a descendant, and was thus prompted to write to Forester, being somewhat lost at the absence of Lady Barbara from his family pedigree, 25.5 x 18.5cm; Admiral of the White Sir William Hargood GCH, KCB (1762-1839), manuscript letter in a secretarial hand, addressed to The Commanding Officer of His Majesty's Cutter Speedy [Lieutenant Justus Peter Roepel (1793-1847)], 1pp, dated [HMS] San Josef, in Hamoaze [River Tamar, Cornwall], 8th October 1833, being a order for the Speedy to proceed to Falmouth, with a chest of medicines and other items for the squadron, and when he's disposed of them agreeable to the direction of Captain Andrew King CB, Superintendent of Packets at that port, to return to Hamoaze, signed with the autograph of the admiral himself: Hargood, MS on watermarked J. Whatman, Turkey Mill paper, dated 1825, 31 x 19.5cm, enclosed in its original addressed packet, further inscribed: On His Majesty's Service, (2)
1st: Both Captain Horatio Hornblower and Lady Barbara Hornblower (née Wellesley) first appear in The Happy Return (Beat to Quarters), C.S. Forester's first Hornblower novel, published in 1937, which Mr. Calthrop appears not to have read until 12 years later.
