C.F.A. Voysey. An early electric bronze poppy seed-head table lamp, designed by C.F.A. Voysey in 1904 and manufactured by W Bainbridge Reynolds Ltd or Thomas Elsley, of cast bronze in brown patina, the weighted base incorporating the switch, the domed shade of spun brass
Provenance: Christie's, anon sale, 1992, lot 56 (as by Thomas Elsley) whence bought by the present vendor
The design was published in The Studio in 1908. It was reproduced in Elsley's catalogue as both model numbers 677 and 21E, with variations to detail. Although now rare, it was still listed in 1923 in Reynolds' catalogue, priced at £4.12.0
Another example is illustrated in a contemporary photograph of the interior of Voysey's office. The example originally at Moor Crag, Bowness-on-Windermere is in the collection of Brighton Museum
In the same good condition as when purchased at the 1992 sale, except for the loss of one of the two tiny round-headed nuts by which the shade is secured
