1963 was the year that Beatlemania hit the Royal Variety Performance. As well as being the band's first Royal Variety, in which they're numbered seventh in the programme's listing, the evening was made famous by John Lennon's anti-Establishment quip, 'For our last number, I'd like to ask your help. The people in the cheaper seats, clap your hands. And the rest of you, if you'd just rattle your jewellery.'
