£100 - £200
A VICTORIAN WAX STATUETTE OF LORD BYRON BY J CAVE (FL 1820-50) incised by J CAVE London 1834, on ebonised base beneath glass dome and a shaped and varnished engraving of LORD BYRON AND HIS FAVOURITE, backed on wood (2)
Another example of the statuette was bequeathed by Rupert Gunnis to the Victoria & Albert Museum (No .74-1965). The V&A also holds a bust of George IV by J Cave, a sculptor of whom little is known, dated 8 October 1830. It is similarly signed and another wax study of William IV on a sofa is known. This model was later published in parian porcelain. Cave is recorded in Pyke (EJ), Biographical Dictionary of Wax Modellers, Oxford 1973, p26.
Much encrusted with old dust and dirt and with some old repair. Glass dome undamaged. Engraving with some lifting of the paper and small losses
