Cotton's celebrated topographical poem satirises and cribs from Thomas Hobbes' De Mirabilibus Pecci, describing in heroic couplets the Seven Wonders of the Peak, the last of which is Chatsworth, the seat of the Cavendish family, the then earls and now dukes of Devonshire.
