Rev. Adolphus Frederick Aylward (1822-1871), a notebook of original and presumably unpublished verse in his autograph hand, dated 1842-43, [78]pp, ink manuscript on paper, some sonnets and other poems, including "Quiet - English Scene", "The Mother and her Dying Boy", "Lines written in a country churchyard", "Retirement", others, mostly of a religious nature, some excised leaves, but without loss to extant contents, contemporary quarter-roan over marbled boards, 12mo; a finely bound early 19th c lady's commonplace book, Frances Jane, dated 1817, 113pp, possibly Lancashire in origin, with various sermons, notes and précis, of the evangelical Reverend Roger Carus Wilson (1792-1839), dated Preston, some original verse, contemporary blue straight-grained morocco, lettered in gilt, yellow edges, marbled endpapers, 8vo; Reverend Canon William Stevens Bayton (1771-1848), of Chichester Cathedral, his commonplace book of philosophy and theology, n.d.,  approx. [60]pp only, including extracts from Rousseau, John Keble, Foster's Essays, etc., some loosely-inserted manuscripts, fine sombre binding of straight-grain black morocco, rolled in blind, chased lockable clasp, all edges gilt, moiré endpapers, upper-cover with late 19th/early 20th c lot label, 4to; H.J. The first manuscript was written during Aylward's student years at St Edmund Hall, Oxford. Later vicar of Chesham, Buckinghamshire, where he succumbed to typhoid after bravely playing a prominent part in the parish's epidemic.
