A NOTTINGHAM SALTGLAZED BROWN STONEWARE PUZZLE JUG, DATED 1717 incised with a tulip flanked by the date 17/17 and berried foliage, 12cm h

Provenance: anon sale in these 'rooms, 12 June 2013, lot 82 (5500).

The second earliest recorded example of a Nottingham stoneware puzzle jug. Made at John Morley's Beck Barns Pottery, this well potted lightweight jug and its pleasing incised decoration are wholly in keeping and are seen on a number of other mugs and loving cups. The much plainer example that is dated 1713 (or 15) which may be ascribed to Nottingham is illustrated in the catalogue of the exhibition Nottingham Saltglazed Stoneware 1690-1800, Nottingham City Museum & Galleries 2010, No 145
